Beginner arranging dried flowers on a pumpkin at a floral workshop in Irvine, Orange County

What Really Happens at a Dried Floral Pumpkin Workshop (Irvine, CA)

Every fall, the same picture goes around: a pale pumpkin, half-covered in dried blooms in dusty rose and rust and cream, sitting on a linen table runner looking effortless.

It is not effortless. But it is very, very learnable about two hours' worth, if someone hands you the right materials and shows you where to start.

Here's exactly what happens inside a pumpkin floral centerpiece workshop, based on how we run ours at Lumé Petals in Irvine, CA.

You don't need to be crafty. This is the actual bar.

The most common sentence we hear at the door is some version of "I should warn you, I'm not creative."

Nobody has ever been right about that.

Dried floral arranging is not drawing. There's no blank page, no skill you either have or don't. It's closer to arranging things on a shelf: you're placing objects in a space until the balance feels right, and your eye already knows how to do that. The instruction fills in the three or four techniques that make the difference where the focal flower goes, how to build depth, when to stop.

That's it. That's the whole barrier to entry.

What you actually make

A real pumpkin, transformed into a dried floral centerpiece built to last the entire season.

You choose your palette from the materials table preserved and dried blooms, eucalyptus, seed heads, dried grasses, textural bits and build an arrangement onto the pumpkin itself. Some people go full crescent along one side. Some people go for a tight, dense cluster on top. Some people go maximalist and cover half the thing.

There's no correct version, which is a large part of why the room gets loud about forty minutes in.

How long it takes

Our workshops are about two hours. We begin by choosing your flowers and materials and preparing everything for your design. Then, we guide you step by step through the process and show you how to create your own arrangement. Tea is also served throughout the workshop, and there’s plenty of time to enjoy the creative process and take photos of your finished piece.

How to make your dried floral pumpkin last all season

Dried florals are forgiving, but a few things genuinely matter.

Keep it out of direct sun

UV is what fades dried flowers, faster than anything else. A spot with bright indirect light keeps the color true for months.

No moisture

Don't mist it, don't put it next to a humidifier, don't leave it in a steamy kitchen. Dried florals and humidity are not friends.

Dust with cool air, not a cloth

A hairdryer on the cool setting from about a foot away, or canned air. Wiping breaks petals.

Move it as a unit

Two hands under the pumpkin, not one hand on the flowers.

Treated this way, a dried floral pumpkin comfortably makes it from September through Thanksgiving and plenty of people keep the floral crown afterward and reuse it on a wreath base.

Who books this workshop

Looking at who's actually in the room on a given afternoon:

  • Friend groups easily the biggest category. It's a better girls' night than dinner because there's something to do with your hands while you talk.
  • Couples, especially on weekday evenings. Low-pressure, no one has to be good at it.
  • Birthdays and small celebrations we can arrange a personalized name frame with advance notice.
  • People who came alone. More than you'd think, and they're never alone by the end of it.
  • Mother-and-daughter pairs, which is consistently the sweetest table in the room.

Across 11 reviews, the workshop currently holds a straight 5-star rating the words that come up most are "warm," "friendly," and "so many supplies."
